Since , the Strindberg Society has organised international Strindberg conferences. During the whole of his writing career Strindberg was a restless canon-maker. In his capacity as writer, librarian, cultural scholar, polemicist and amateur researcher he constantly quoted sources, both historical and contemporary, including and excluding authors in his own work, and stretched and re-evaluated the boundaries of cultural values around the turn of the twentieth century.
At the same time, he was a very active author in his own right, living in self-chosen exile but with an international intellectual background. All of this raises questions as to his relationship with the literary and cultural canon. The dynamics between local and global culture define the whole of his oeuvre and makes him one of those European authors that allow themselves to be interpreted in the context of Weltliteratur. The languages of the conference will be English and Swedish.

The evolution of negation is often discussed in terms of a grammaticalization process dubbed Jespersen Cycle by Dahl Within this process, negation markers are seen to originate from emphatic elements in the negative phrase which gradually lose their sense of emphasis and are eventually interpreted as general verbal negators.
Croft has suggested negative existentials as another source for negation markers. Despite recent renewed interest in cyclical processes in language change and negative cycles in particular cf. In order to examine the realizations of this cycle from an extensive cross-linguistic perspective we, Ljuba Veselinova University of Stockholm and Arja Hamari University of Helsinki , have started a collaborative effort; we are now inviting other scholars to join in. In the case of the Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden, it was particularly Germany which provided the cultural frame of reference in this process taking place in the 19th century — a reciprocal process not only sustained by the many Scandinavian artists who felt drawn to Germanys contemporary cultural centres in Dresden or Munich, but also by a continuously growing interest into the Scandinavian countries amongst the German cultural elite. One might thus argue that the construction of national identity in Scandinavia evolved not only in the context of developments in Germany, but also within the dialectic of the construction of a peculiar national cultural identity in each Scandinavian country and the emergence of an overarching idea of "the North".
Until the s, this reevaluation of the North started to assume shape mostly from within landscape painting. The aforementioned transnational relationship becomes evident in the case of Norwegian painter and friend of Caspar David Friedrichs, Johan Christian Dahl Culturally and intellectually socialized in Copenhagen and Dresden, Dahl crucially contributed to the development of a peculiar Norwegian national identity through his preservationist and artistic activities from outside his home country.
Starting with the first world exhibition in , the Scandinavian countries represented themselves abroad for the first time by sending artistic exhibits, which contributed to the consolidation of national self-images as well. At the turn of the century, it were first and foremost the ship cruises by German emperor Wilhelm II into the Norwegian fjords, that finally opened up Norway as a destination of mass tourism, ensuring the global dissemination of a positive image of the North.
The aim of this international colloquium is to look into the role of the arts within the process of the emergence of national identities in the Scandinavian countries and Germany. In particular, light will be shed on the yet under-researched transnational and reciprocal relationships between Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, which were essential in this process. PhD-students and Postdocs in art history and related disciplines are invited to submit an abstract of max.
The Colloquium will be held in English and German. Please send your proposal including a current CV to: norden zikg. Frie ord i Norden? Tysk-nordisk workshop for forskere og stipendiater.

Det samme gjelder skillet mellom offentlig og privat. Workshopen begynner om kvelden 1. In the last decades of the nineteenth century Scandinavian literature emerged as a power to be reckoned with in European and world literature. How can we explain the rise of such a phenomenon from the periphery? How was the so-called "Modern Breakthrough" received abroad? And what were some of the effects of this wave of literature and drama?
Invited speakers will present research on related topics and offer international perspectives on Scandinavias "Modern Breakthrough". Kontakt Jenny Nilsson Telefon: 75 34 E-post: jenny. In their work, they trace the historical context of Arctic Cinema and map down different cinematic approaches with the unifying element of the Arctic. Stenport, eds. This two-day symposium seeks to take advantage of this extremely timely topic of research. Our goal is to gather scholars with research interests connected to Nordic forms of cinema with the aim of promoting a discussion and presenting this idea of Arctic Cinema in relation to an ecologic ethnography of the Nordic regions.
The Arctic has recently been subject of interest within scientific fields.
It has not received the same degree of attention from film studies. This is, however, changing, as the works mentioned above show, and we believe it is imperative to include film studies in the academic discussions leading to a deeper understanding of the Arctic, since it is our conviction that film has a potential to make use of its aesthetic and experiential qualities to trace the identity of the Arctic in angles that can appeal to film scholars, anthropologists, literature scholars and other fields of cultural studies.
